How I Fit Writing Into My Schedule

Happy Tuesday friends! I’ve been asked recently how I fit writing into my day and how I keep it a priority. Because my writing is so important to me and is something I’m very passionate about, I try to find time to do at least a little every day. Honestly, writing keeps me sane. It really is like my therapy, as crazy as that sounds.

These are my tips on how I was able to write two full books and start my blog, all while still managing school, classes, my babysitting jobs and volleyball season.

(To the nice gentleman sitting behind me in Starbucks . . . thank you for not minding us basically taking pictures of you while you minded your own business working on your laptop. Your cooperation was much appreciated.)

  • I’m homeschooled.

Now, I know most teens can’t simply decide one day that they want to be homeschooled so they have more time to do things they’re passionate about and drop out of public school, but this is, I believe, a HUGE part of how I’m able to do so much writing. I’m pretty independent with my school work, so I’m able to take time out of the middle of my day to blog and can then do the rest of my work later on in the day. As long as it’s getting done and I’m becoming educated, it doesn’t really matter when I do my school work.

  • In the morning.

Some mornings I’ll wake up early and jump on my laptop to get some writing or editing done before I start school (I usually start around 9a.m. on mornings that I’m home). In the summer, I love getting up around 7:30 or 8, when the house is pretty quiet, and writing out on the back deck until about 11. I’ll eat breakfast out there, take breaks to run in and refill my water, and listen to music the whole time. It’s my favorite way to spend a summer morning!

  • Every . . . single . . . evening.

If I’m not sitting, wrapped in a blanket, with my laptop before I go to bed . . . please ask me what’s wrong. I know, it sounds like I have no life. But I LOVE ending my day with a bit of writing. On nights when I get home late, I’ll at least journal a little before falling asleep. And on nights when I get home early, I’ll write from about 7 to 10 or 11, so that’s another solid few hours.

  • Random times throughout the day.

This depends on my schedule for the day, but I like to hop on the laptop between appointments or while I’m eating lunch. Also, I carry a small notebook with me in case I get inspiration while on the go.

So there you have it. Obviously I don’t write morning, noon, and night every single day, but those are the times I try to fit in some writing; of course it changes a bit each day though.

I feel like I just did a little Day in the life of Gabriella (. . . Maybe some day??). When you love something as much as I love to write, why not do it as often as you can? (as long as you’re keeping your priorities straight, of course.) Obviously, my daily schedule is a lot different from most people my age, so I’m not sure if this is a huge help to those of you in school, but I thought it’d still be fun to show you how I make time for my writing (especially because I’ve gotten a lot of questions about it).

I hope your week is off to a good start!

With love,

Gabriella

  1. Hey there! I know this is kinda off topic but I was wondering which blog platform are you using for this site? I’m getting sick and tired of WordPress because I’ve had problems with hackers and I’m looking at options for another platform. I would be fantastic if you could point me in the direction of a good platform.

  2. I always admire your passion for writing! You have come so far and it is incredible to see such dedication at a young age. Great work Gabriella!
