How To Go Longer Between Hair Washes

There are several benefits to washing your hair less often. It keeps your scalp healthier, therefore encouraging hair growth, and it can also make your lifestyle much easier. Less washes equals less blow drying, curling, and straightening.

I used to wash my hair at least every other day, but for the last two months, I’ve been trying to wash it less to keep it healthier and make life easier. BUT, I like my hair to look fresh and clean! Unless I’m at the gym, I don’t want oily or flat looking hair! So let me tell you how I’ve been keeping it looking clean, while training it to go longer between washes.

By “training my hair” I mean that the less you wash it, the less it will need to be washed.

First of all, everyone’s hair is different. Figure out the amount of days you like to go between washing your hair, and then try to slowly extend it. It might take some time, but that’s ok!

When you wash it, use a clarifying shampoo, or wash your hair twice. That way you really get rid of any exess oil on your scalp.

Only use conditioner on the very ends. Of course, in some cases, like if you have really dry skin, you might need to use more conditioner. But if you can avoid it, it’s best to only use it on the ends of your hair because it can make your roots oily quicker.

Don’t use a lot of product on your roots. Like with the conditioner, it can make your roots oily when you use products near your scalp. If you use a mousse or blow dry cream, try to keep it only on the midshaft and ends.

Sleep with your hair up. Since I just cut my hair, I can’t really get it all into a hairtie on top of my head, lol. BUT, when I had long hair, I wore it either in a loose ponytail (using a scrunchy NOT a hairtie so it didn’t damange my hair) or a bun on top of my head. Getting it up and out of the way while you sleep helps ir to stay better overnight and keeps it from getting oily. It also gives your hair more volume when you take it out the next day!

Dry shampoo the heck out of it. On the second or third day after washing, you might need some help. I’ve tried a bunch of different dry shampoos, and the only one that I’ve found that really works to get rid of oil and give my hair lots of volume, is the Batiste Volumizing Dry Shampoo. It has actually changed the game for me when it comes to getting another day or two out of my hair before washing it.

Find hairstyles that work for that third, fourth, + day. When my hair is in need of a wash, sometimes I’ll wear a hat, or put it in a style like a low bun or braid the front. If you’re really desperate, you can also use baby powder on your roots (I know, it sounds weird, but it works!!) and then blow dry your hair on the cool setting. That, and a little more dry shampoo, should get rid of the oil and make your hair look fresh for an extra day!

Love,

Gabriella
