Time well Spent

Hello, there! I hope your week is going well! I just got back from yet another vacation in Maine, and have been soaking up the last bits of summer. My volleyball season is officially beginning today, so I’m starting to get those fall vibes back. Thankfully, school doesn’t start for me until mid-September, but my schedule will definitely be a bit crazier with volleyball.

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about how I spend my time. I’ve tried to perfect living with the mindset that my time on earth is only the beginning of my life; that it is simply preparation for eternity. That way, my focus is on building God’s kingdom instead of my own, and I’m storing up my treasure in heaven instead of on earth. In other words, I’m spending my time and energy on the things that will last after my life here on earth.

We spend so much time on education, finances, our career, and overall bettering ourselves and our lives. We study so we can go to college, work extra hours so we can buy a new car, and spend hundreds on cosmetics and gym memberships so we can look just right. We obsess with grades, sports, and the stress of everyday life.

All of those things are good, but they’re also temporary.

Living life while looking to the future is freeing. When I’m stressed and worried about a situation, I can ask myself, “Is this going to matter when I get to heaven?” Chances are, the answer is no.

Instead of focusing on the pointless drama that so many of us seem so caught up in, I’ve decided to spend my time thinking about and working towards the things that will matter after I die. Relationships and encouraging others is a big one. I have a desire to speak into the lives of teenage girls. To encourage, empower, and speak truth to them. To help them grow and to learn from them in the process.

I want to be a writer because a – I love to write, and b – because I believe that I can help build God’s kingdom through my writing.

Even by playing on a sports team, you can be furthering God’s kingdom. Last week a girl from my small group explained how she felt guilty playing a sport because that meant she didn’t have as much time to serve at church. But she LOVES sports. God gave her a passion for sports, and I told her that He can use her to encourage others and share the good news on a sports team just as much as if she were at church.

As long as He is your first priority, He can use you to be a light in other peoples lives. Even on your basketball, football, soccer, or volleyball team.

The way we look, how much money we have, how many trofies we’ve received – that will all fade. But the relationships that we build, the people we love, encourage, and help, and time spent with God will last forever.

For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! So we don’t look at the troubles we see now; rather, we fix our gaze on the things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.

– 2 Corinthians 4:17-18

Yes, everything else is worthless when compared to the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I can gain Christ.
